Mobile Broadband Can Reach 2 Million Homes without Fixed Line: 3 UK

At the recently held Broadband for All eForum seminar, Phil Sheppard, Director of Technical Solutions at 3 UK expressed that a more dependable and consistent network could be established across the country with the help of mobile broadband. He said that it was the more feasible option in comparison to fixed landline broadband and its most promising feature was that it didn’t require much capital expenditure.

But Sheppard should have made the statement with supporting data and concrete facts and figures for making his claim look more trustworthy. A recent poll by Broadband Genie shows that only around 11 percent users say that they are satisfied with the mobile broadband services, while the remaining 89 percent were unhappy with the speed and reliability of their connection. This clearly indicates that more spectrum or not, mobile broadband still has a long way to go in terms of fixed landline’s quality – click for a mobile broadband speed test.

While talking about Lord Carter’s final Digital Britain report at the seminar, Sheppard projected mobile broadband as a means for fulfilling government’s universal service commitment. He commented that with the allocation of the right spectrum, and by setting up close to four thousand sites, mobile broadband could be provided to around two million households, which are currently without any broadband internet. He further added that this process did not require any sponsorship from the government and developing mobile broadband further was affordable and practical.
